Family Medicine Residency
All Site Content
We greatly enjoy having students rotate in the residency program. If you are a Uniformed Services University or Health Professionals Scholarship Program student and interested in performing a clerkship in family medicine, please contact a clerkship coordinator via email at
I. Clerkship Structure
The clinical clerkship is designed to give the student a full-spectrum family medicine experience. It is an outstanding experience for third-year students needing to complete a family medicine requirement and for fourth-year students desiring to learn more about the residency program and/or specialty.
The bulk of the educational experience occurs in the Family Medicine Clinic. Students will be exposed to a variety of patients in clinic typically seen by a family physician. They will also have the opportunity to participate in procedures commonly performed in the clinic. These procedures include vasectomies, exercise stress testing, minor skin procedures, and outpatient gynecologic procedures.
In addition to working in the Family Medicine Clinic students may also spend time in the Geriatrics Clinic, Pain Management Clinic, Sports Medicine Clinic, on the wards with the Family Medicine Inpatient Service, and on the labor deck.
For senior students performing a sub-internship, the rotation will be divided equally between inpatient and outpatient experiences. The fourth-year sub-internship is designed to give students a full-spectrum family medicine experience that mirrors that of our interns. The various settings that the student will gain this experience include the Family Medicine Clinic, Primary Care Sports Medicine Clinic, inpatient wards, labor deck and the Emergency Department (ED). When rotating on the wards, students are assigned to the Family Medicine Inpatient Service. Students will follow patients and are expected to present them during morning rounds with the team. Additionally, students will go to the ED to evaluate patients for admission to the hospital. Students will have the opportunity to write the history and physical, orders, and daily progress notes. Lastly, students will have the opportunity to take overnight call in the hospital.
Below is a typical daily schedule for a student performing an outpatient rotation:
Residency didactics: 7:30 to 8:15 a.m.
Clinic: 8:30 a.m. to noon
Lunch: Noon to 1 p.m.
Clinic: 1 to 4:30 p.m.
Students are required to attend all educational experiences assigned by clerkship coordinators. If there is a schedule conflict, the student must contact a clerkship coordinator prior to being absent. Students are required to attend all residency didactic sessions unless directly involved in patient care or excused by a clerkship coordinator.
IV. Evaluations and Feedback
Clerkship coordinators are responsible for collecting verbal and written feedback for each student so that the coordinators can effectively complete the student’s written evaluation at the end of the rotation. Written feedback is collected electronically via Survey Monkey. Students are expected to remind their preceptors in person and via email to submit written feedback to the Clerkship Coordinators.
