Graduate Medical Education

Welcome to the best of military family medicine! The National Capital Consortium Fort Belvoir Community Hospital is the military’s first tri-service family medicine training program and one of the oldest family medicine residencies in the Army. Initially established in 1973 and with more than 200 graduates, the residency sets the benchmark for excellence in family medicine education.

Structured as an unopposed 12-12-12 program, the residency currently accepts six Army, four Air Force and two Navy applicants to internship.

Serving a population of more than 150,000 beneficiaries, Fort Belvoir Community Hospital has a robust obstetrical service, newborn nursery, inpatient service, ICU, subspecialty consultant services and outpatient clinics. The Residency Clinic alone cares for more than 30,000 empanelled patients providing more than 5,000 visits each month.

As the only residency in the hospital, residents are directly involved in all aspects of their patient’s care. Inova Fairfax Hospital, one of the nation’s top-20 hospitals, augments the training experiences of our residents with rotations in critical care, trauma medicine, and pediatrics. In addition, the residency sponsors the military’s only Family Medicine-Sports Medicine Fellowship program.

Fort Belvoir Community Hospital opened in 2011 and is a joint-service healthcare network providing world-class medical healthcare to the nations wounded, active-duty service members, retirees and family members. The hospital is designed to increase inpatient and outpatient care for service members and veterans in the National Capital Region.
